Male Breasts

Male breasts or gynaecomastia is a common condition that brings embarrassment to its owner. Some known causes include steroid use in bodybuilders and being overweight. It can sometimes be the result of a hormonal imbalance or abnormality, which has to be checked for, but cases of gynaecomastia have no known cause. In any case, the condition is unsightly and a great psychological burden in today's society, which stresses muscular chests and abdomens.

Fortunately, correction of male breasts is relatively straightforward and very successful. The exact method of correction depends on the age of the sufferer, the volume of tissue that needs to be reduced and also the predominant tissue within the breast. In young men, firm, dense tissue tends to predominate and the breasts may need a combination of liposuction and tissue excision. Later in life, the prominent breasts tend to be mainly composed of fatty tissue and liposuction may be sufficient to correct the problem. If there is excess of skin as well as breast tissue, open surgery may be required.

An accurate and detailed assessment by your surgeon will determine these factors and also the best way of correcting the problem.
